Mon 30th and Tues 31st October 2017 (10am – 12.30pm)
Monday 30 th October – This session aims to introduce young sewers to using a sewing machine. We will start from the very beginning with no need for previous experience. First we will look at threading the machine properly. Next we will discover how to sew in straight lines and how to turn corners. We will look at how to pin and hem work, joining materials with a dress making seam and assembling a project together. Each participant will leave with a completed cushion cover and the skills to use the machine safely and competently. This session can be completed alone or in conjunction with the second session on 31st .
Tuesday 31 st October – This session aims to introduce young sewers to creating projects with a zip. We will create a fully lined pencil case with an exposed zip. The session will introduce the use of a zipper foot on the sewing machine as well as how to create shaping to the case to make a more 3D project. Each participant will leave with a fully finished case ready for the next school term and the confidence to add zips to future projects. This session can be done alone if the child is already competent at using a sewing machine. If they are new to using a sewing machine it is recommended that they complete both days of the sewing school. Students are welcome to bring their own machine but there will be one available to use on the day.
