Make Your Own Patchwork QuiltReturn to Workshops |
![]() About this Workshop: We have had lots of interest from crafty individuals wanting to learn how to make their own patchwork quilt, so we have asked our lovely tutor Janet Bottomley to run a 2 day workshop for us on Saturday 10th March and Saturday 21st April. On the first day you will be learning patchwork techniques and creating 'blocks' (large squares) of your fabric pieces. There are 100's of different block designs (with witty names like 'fox and goose' and 'drunkards path') and Janet will be able to advise you on the best designs to show off your fabric. On the second day we will be sewing the blocks together and quilting the whole piece and learning how to add a border. Again there are numerous ways you can quilt and Janet can advise you on the best technique for you. Inbetween the workshops we have left plenty of time for you to carry on and make more blocks at home. Over the two day workshop you will have enough time to create a lap quilt or cot quilt, but if you want to make a quilt for a single or double bed you will still learn all the techniques for need you to create a larger quilt but you will have to do a bit of sewing at home! As quilts are very personal items you will need to bring your own fabric along to the workshop. You don't need to buy new fabric (unless you want to), it's perfectly fine to use used, or pre- loved fabric as long as it’s 100% cotton. You may wish to make the quilt (or incorporate fabric) from items that are personal to you such as from your children's old clothes, men’s shirts, girls summer dresses or boys shirts. You can even back the quilt with a old cotton sheet. If you prefer to use new fabric try Patchwork Garden on Abbeydale Road or Direct Knitting and Sewing Supplies in Attercliffe, or online at places such as www.doughtysonline.co.uk. You will need a minimum of 2 metres of fabric for a small quilt, in at least four different fabrics to give variety to the blocks. (i.e. 4 half metres, or 8 ‘fat quarters’). If you wish to make a bigger quilt you will need more fabric! Border fabric, wadding and backing will be discussed at the first workshop so that you can buy want you need before the second workshop. Some supplies may be available from our tutor, Janet. The workshop will be led by our lovely tutor Janet Bottomley who is a patchwork and quilting fanatic and has many years teaching experience. Janet (and all the Running With Scissors tutors) are relaxed about your sewing style, the workshop is not about creating a perfectly geometric quilt but having fun and creating a quilt which is unique and special to you. Over the two days Janet will be able to tell you all about the history, design and techniques of patchwork and quilting and will bring to the workshops lots of examples of quilts to inspire you to create something unique and wonderful for yourself. You can see photos of Janet's own work on her blogs: www.aquiltersjournal.blogspot.com www.cityandguildspatchworkandquilting.blogspot.com There are five Running With Scissors machines available to use at the workshop, however you can bring your own if you wish. If you have a quarter inch foot and a walking foot for your machine please bring them along with you and have a look at your manual to check if you can drop the ‘feed dog’ (the metal teeth which help feed the material under the machine foot). Please note that if you bring your own machine it will be up to you to make sure that it is in good working order and is safe to use. Running with Scissors can not take responsibility for use of machines other than our own. |
